Travertine Stone

Travertine is a limestone. It is a natural stone such as marble, granite, onyx, limestone, slate, etc. The key difference between natural travertine stones and others lies in rock formation, stone hardness, and appearance.

Travertine is formed in hot springs and / or limestone caves. Travertine is not the same as marble or limestone that falls under the category of metamorphic rock. The key features of travertine stone are the holes within the stone that are caused by the evasion of carbon dioxide.

It is made up of geysers. When extremely hot groundwater dissolves the underlying limestone and carries it upward with the geyser water. When the water falls to the ground and evaporates, it leaves the limestone dissolved, which re-hardens into stone. The new stone is full of gas bubbles, which give travertine its characteristic appearance.
